Christophe Godin - Metal Kartoon (2005)

Christophe Godin - Metal Kartoon (2005)Les Mercenaires Associés

Do you remember The Mörglbl Trio's albums with a snazzy trinity? No, thus I will remind you of them on the occassion of Godin's first solo release. On this album the triad is made of Christophe Godin (guitar, vocal), Ivan Rougny (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Jean-Pierre Frelezeau (drums). In comparison to The Mörglbl Trio's CDs, the difference lies in the fact that they are supported by another musician - Jérôme Ogier (violin, keys, backing vocals).

Mr. Godin has followed the direction taken on Mörglbl's albums in a sense, but I don't suggest that he could duplicate a pattern from the past. I want to accentuate that he widened an array of instrumental ideas and added his vocal lines to the lot. Here is the only one track in English, however French language in this kind of music can seem to be strange enough, but it's a matter of personal taste and reception. Hopefully, he didn't go away from his humorous perception of music, and surely didn't copy Mörglbl's releases. Upon listening to "Metal Kartoon", we have a good time thanks to a joking guitar parts and twisted solos with a bit Asian sound. When I listen to a fusion Muppet Show on "Nancy & Joe", I start to wonder how to label the album. Obviously, here are traditionally a few instrumental tracks, melodic and acoustic interpolations plus a noble sound of violin, but it isn't a genre switch comparing to Mörglbl's discs. In my opinion, Mr. Godin and Company produced a syncretical album where fusion and funk styles meet virtuosic cartoon rock'n'roll, haha.

On account on Christophe's authority and equally skilled partners, he managed to serve us musical jokes in a brand new tableware on a fresh place setting, haha. I honestly recommend this stuff to those who enjoyed Krzyszt of Misiak's, Michael Orlando's and John5's works, as I fully took pleasure listening to "Metal Kartoon".
